The Nanny Diaries

Well, I watched this movie last night and found it quite enjoyable. The basic plot of the movie, for those who do not know, is of a college grad (Annie, played by Scarlett Johanssonwho is not sure of what she wishes to do with her life. When she saves a little boy (Grayer, played by Nicholas Art), she receives offers from many Upper Side (of New York) mom`s to become their nanny. One of these moms is Grayer`s own mother, Mrs. X (Laura Linney), with whom Annie begins work in the hope that the job will give her some time to step away from the real world and do some thinking. What she does not know is that dear Mrs. X is a very controlling woman, and that the job she has stepped into will almost be like hell on earth.

Now, despite some negative reviews I have seen of the movie, I liked it. I think Scarlett did a great job as Annie, and I could really connect with her in some of the emotional scenes with Grayer, though the opposite happened with her final confrontation with Mrs. X (if you have seen the movie you know what I mean with that); I do not know why, but that scene just felt flat in my opinion.

I enjoyed the journey that Laura`s character took throughout the movie, and I believe she was great in the role. She worked every one of her scenes convencingly, and it was easy to feel sorry for her even when you wanted to hate her. Seriously, I loved her in here.

The ending of the movie could have been changed quite a bit, and it was probably the one part of the movie I did not like. I would have much more liked it if Annie went back to work with the X`s, simply because I felt tremendously sorry for Grayer when he lost Annie. The last scene of the movie, I felt, was just not a good ending. They tried to show how all was good and well and that is all good, but I did not like the way they went about doing that.

Over all, I would give this movie an 8/10 stars. It actually holds a pretty good message and manages to tell it well. But if you are looking for a movie masterpiece, then this is not for you. It is not the best movie in the world and it holds many low points, but it is enjoyable anyways and most of the acting is good.

Cheers,

Drew
